@abraxas3d @n6cta Yeah, #Winlink can be a royal PITA.
@bud_t @abraxas3d @n6cta Winlink over VARA HF is working well for me. That may change over the weekend as I move to the mobile setup ;)
@G0TRT @bud_t @n6cta what an odd experience to get a reply from G0TRT.
Ciemon, you publicly harangued me when I talked about the disappointing failures at ARISS AREx (since shut down) concerning open source, demographics, and accessibility requirements.
I was at all the meetings where this and other related things happened. You stomped on me pretty hard, clearly insinuating that my word wasn't any good.
Well, it was, and is.
@abraxas3d I don't remember that, feel free to send me a copy of what you think I said. Stomping on people I don't know, on a subject I know very little about is not something I do. But thanks anyway.

The ARISS AREx meetings were a huge investment of time. The comments I made were accurate. In fact, the failures of ARISS AREx are substantially worse than I reported. Sticking a Phase 3 satellite from storage on a big mechanical arm attached to flight hardware, without the consent of the company that made the hardware, and trying to sell this to NASA as "from" the amateur community? Well, the answer was No.
Attacks about ORI's GSOC on AMSAT-BB are easily found.
@G0TRT I associate your call with this conversation. It came across as sealioning for "links" (which is a demand never satisfied - I've fallen for this before).
Bonus: ordinary technical and managerial critique namecalled as "ranting".
I assure anyone reading along, you have not seen a proper rant from me on any social media, in the entire history of my lived service to this good earth. Rants are in person only, as per the Geneva Convention.
I went on to do debris mitigation regulatory work.
@G0TRT next week, I meet with two teams that want to use open source amateur radio stuff in their space projects, and will continue to support five different teams that are doing work that will help amateur space and aerospace.
The assumption on your part, in that conversation, that I was a liar is part of the reason so many people like me abandon traditional amateur radio groups like ARISS, AMSAT, etc.
I'm raising a real issue; I get contempt; I find other places to spend my time and energy.
@G0TRT I hope that sums this up. AREx was a failure.
It wasn't for lack of people like me trying. ORI introduced modern technology, modern management, and offered $30k of funding in a written support contract. I organized a team of 30 volunteers specifically for AREx.
The result? A demand to dissolve ORI (??) and a clumsy attempt to remove me from the meetup and mailing list. It was such a bizarre, and sexist, power grab that even the AMSAT-DL people noticed and pulled back. It was a fiasco.
@G0TRT the long-term outcome after broadening the focus from hamradio has been very good. We were all confused by the weird messaging from AREx. We felt strongly obligated to support these orgs that kept shitting on us, but after that job especially, we refocused.
There's a huge cultural problem in amateur radio and it directly affects people trying to support good work. I did a demographic study, published all sorts of email threads, blogged about problems - it's never "enough".
@G0TRT So, while I still write and present about these things, it's just a much smaller part of what I care about compared to earlier, where I was almost completely devoted to contributing to amateur radio.
For example, tomorrow I present to SD ARES about the technical advisor/specialist/coordinator program from ARRL.
I talk about statistics, structure, and the biggest challenges faced by the TCs, information gathered in August 2023.
I think this is decent work and I'm happy to do it.
@G0TRT however, just the fact that a TC meetup happened triggered a very negative reaction from some at ARRL HQ.
Static happens whether the work is good or not. People can either be part of the static, sniping at any statement, presentation, paper, or prototype, or not. At t this point in my life, I assume anything that smells like grumpy static is in fact ozone and should be actively avoided. If some honest critique gets caught up in this, then that's a small price to pay for avoiding trolls.
@G0TRT To close, if one is really not a troll, then one will not act like one.
Or, to put it in a contrapositive-ready form,
"Friends are friendly. Unfriendly people are not your friends."
@abraxas3d LMAO, look at what just happened. Absolutely none of what you posted is of any interest to me whatsoever. Why did you do that.. I actually don't want an answer.
I am not a troll, we are not friends, I don't know you. But you were rude, and are rude, you owe me an apology for the slander btw.
