"Having about 500 active members for a year now, it’s an amount that’s more than 'not worth the while' but also 'too frustratingly close to breaking-even'"
This is a shame. I'm not a member, but had considered it. Their kits are so pretty!
@m0puh I was a member for a while but the rate the projects dropped was faster than I could build them in the time I had available. I told Saar about my struggles but the business model was too rigid to provide a solution. I ended up cancelling when my son was born. It worked for some hardcore soldersmokers but it needed to evolve to meet the needs of casuals like me and hopefully this news means good things ahead.
@M0TDN Ahh right, it must be very hard to get reliable cashflow in that sort of business while allowing for the sort of flexibility real people need.
I'm looking forward to buying some one-offs as presents and things when you don't have to join to do that.
Things like The Matrix could look great on homebrew stuff - https://www.boldport.com/products/the-matrix
@m0puh my first project was the matrix, it was very challenging, the surface mount LEDs were time consuming to build and then I made an absolute mess of the IC soldering which ended up tearing up the tracks and destroyed my circuit board right at the end I was really looking forward to trying it out too
@M0TDN Argh! I bet that was super annoying.
Here's hoping they make a new version next year for you to try again
@m0puh to be fair, it was wayy over my ability level and I learned a lot in spite of it. Saar also offered to send me a spare board which I turned down because I thought I might be able to fix it but I never did.
I think I'd stand a good chance doing it again but that's the skills I learnt from it.
I now always start with the hardest components first!
@M0TDN Not all bad news then, and that sounds like great service!
Something I read again and again, and totally agree with is that to learn things properly you have to give yourself "permission to fail". It's just a shame failing sometimes costs money!
