Hi all, unfortunately I have not had time to queue up questions for #HamTalk this week. Still, feel free to ask your own questions, show off your #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio equipment, or any sort of thing you like!

I will have questions ready for next week!

N3VEM

@ingalls I’ll toss out question for you!, just because It’s something I’m often curious about - since Ham Radio is a hobby of many hobbies, what is everyone’s current ‘niche’ in the hobby? Digital modes? HF Ragchewing? Repeaters? RC or Radio Telemetry stuff? ? Kit Building? Etc?

@N3VEM This is a good one! I’m into digital modes right now but I really want to get into POTA / SOTA.

@N3VEM @ingalls I'm primarily interested in using computers over radio; currently things like packet & APRS. Unfortunately the curmudgeons in the backwater where I live are only interested in traditional contesting, chest thumping about ARES, and talking about gardening on VHF nets. So it's kind of lonely here ...

@N3VEM @ingalls the only reason I’m currently studying for a license is to use an off the shelf commercial telemetry solution for amateur rocketry that operates in 70cm bands. Anything else is a side bonus.

@ingalls @cabbey very nice! I’ve been doing some telemetry stuff for rocketry in both the 70cm band using LoRa, and 2m band using APRS, as part of my @RadioRocket project, but in my case it’s DIY telemetry stuff. Everything I’ve been doing is mid-power, but at some point I’ll likely take the plunge for at least L1.

@N3VEM I have a featherweight tracker which uses lora in the 900mhz range… amazing device. Walks me right to my rocket, keeps a solid lock to 10s of thousands of feet. With L2 rockets, and even high performance L1s, recovery without tracking is darn near impossible out in the sage brush where we fly. I’ll have to give @RadioRocket a look over when I have some cycles.

@N3VEM @ingalls digital and contests, but mostly figuring out the K4 which appeared in my shack recently.

@N3VEM @ingalls Almost twenty years since getting my license, finally starting to dip my toes in and actually use it... personally, I want to build a couple of kits I collected (so I can buy and build more!!) and get active on digital modes on HF. I especially like the ideas of FT-8/FT-4 and WSPR so I can test homebrewed antennas in the real world and get useful reports.

@N3VEM @ingalls
It would be easier for me to list what i am not into in ham radio. 😂

@ingalls @n3xls lol - yeah, me too - I tend to bounce between things depending on which way the wind is blowing, but most recently I’ve been playing with LoRa and APRS for telemetry on model rockets 🚀

@N3VEM @ingalls
i think if your doing anything in ham radio that is a good thing. especially if its creating interest and getting others active.
