So long, Uhu.

'Uhu the Eurasian eagle-owl will live on in memory as “a huge, sweet owl,” said Karla Bloem.

'Bloem announced Uhu’s death Monday. The owl, among the center’s teaching birds, had severe heart disease. The Raptor Center diagnosed atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, during a regular wellness visit in January. It was a surprise, Bloem said.

'The bird was 13 years old – young by Eurasian eagle-owl standards. Bloem said the species can live 30 to 40 years.'

'“Vaccines are one of the greatest public health achievements in modern medicine,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Ruth Lynfield said, adding that people should consider the protection they offer against influenza, COVID and the virus RSV at the start of respiratory disease season.

'COVID-19 is nowhere near the lethal threat it was during the pandemic, when it was causing more than 70 deaths of Minnesotans per day at its worst. But this year, the state has tallied more than 3,500 hospitalizations and 320 deaths from the now-endemic infectious disease.'

Stan Turner, a longtime Twin Cities newsman who spent more than 40 years as a broadcaster, including at KSTP-TV, died Sunday after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 81 years old.

Turner started his broadcasting career in 1965 in the news department at KDWB Radio. He joined KSTP Radio in 1966, then rejoined KDWB as news director a year later before moving to KSTP and Hubbard Broadcasting long-term in 1968.

Dateline Mallard Island, Rainy Lake, Minn.

"Dozens of artists, students and other people make the trip each summer to Mallard Island, a rocky piece of land in Rainy Lake near the Canadian border that was once the home of legendary environmentalist Ernest Oberholtzer.

"Oberholtzer built a small outpost of rustic buildings on the island a century ago and lived here for 50 years. His foundation maintains the property now as a place for students, artists and pretty much anyone else who can use some quiet contemplation and a creative spark."

“Cameras, security at entrances, weapon detection technology, bulletproof windows, communication systems ... these all cost money, and right now our society would need to make a commitment to invest in our schools,” said Jamie Boelter, superintendent at the New London-Spicer School District.

”It’s kind of like a flash point of emotions come out, whether they’re political left, political right,“ said Brainerd School Superintendent Peter Grant.

”Instead of talking about how to prevent it, they get into the ‘we need more. We need less. These are bad. This is good.’ And then in a month, that kind of fades away."

Got a kick out of this description of the Hibbing songwriter's appearance at Farm Aid 40—

'Deciphering Dylan

'That wasn’t so difficult this time, was it? Four Bob Dylan classics — “All Along the Watchtower,” “To Ramona,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “Highway 61 Revisited” — were easy to recognize by their relatively clearly enunciated lyrics, though the melodies were new and predictably free-wheeling. The hard part was spotting Dylan, who had a black hoodie covering his head as he sat at a piano in light too dim to read a book.'

Omfg this was such a fun show!

Just absolutely the best.

You know that thing about getting rid of the pre-show jitters by thinking about great shows past? This one is one of those.
