@kb1gim maybe the adafruit lora board with this keyboard/display?

@kr4dio that looks pretty neat!
@kb1gim it’s neat, but would take some programming. If you look around github and hackaday, I bet you’ll find an easier solution using an old android phone and an esp32 board.
@kr4dio just saw this, haven't read much: https://social.coop/@dazinism/102674207841890928
@kb1gim I was thinking of something along the lines of these two projects: https://www.hackster.io/akarsh98/lora-remote-control-messenger-with-a-1-8-tft-display-af9465 and https://www.mickmake.com/post/sms-lora-long-distance-sms-without-4g-project
Simplified: Using an ESP32+lora board, implement a BLE serial port, and directly packetize and tx/rx. Run a serial terminal app on an old phone -- cheapest way to get a screen and keyboard.
@kr4dio this idea is still bumbling around in my brain, but I also cam across this #APRS project: https://www.tracksoar.com/ #TrackSoar
